FLAGS AT THE UNITED STATES CAPITOL

FLAGS AT THE UNITED STATES CAPITOL

FLAGS AT THE UNITED STATES CAPITOL

No records are found for the first time the flag was flying over the east and west fronts of the Capitol. Old engravings and lithographs in the office of the Architect of the Capitol show flags flying on either side of the original dome down corridors connecting the areas now known as Statuary Hall and the Old Senate Chamber.

After adding the new House of Representatives and the Senate on the wings of the 1850s, even before the great dome was completed in 1863, photographs of the period show flags flying over every new wing and the middle-east and fronts to the west.

The custom of flying the flags 24 hours a day in the east and west began during World War I. This was in response to requests received from around the country asking that the flag of the United States be flown continuously in buildings public in Washington, DC.
