FORT McHENRY

project of "The Star-Spangled Banner" after seeing the flag still flying after a day and night bombing.

The fort continued in active military service for nearly a century after the battle, but technological change has finally made it obsolete as a coastal defense system. Today, the fort of 43 acres is preserved as a national monument and historic shrine. This property is administered by the National Park Service and the flag is hoisted over the Fort 24 hours a day.
